Off Script — Original Hand-Painted Kinetic Mobile Sculpture
Off Script — Original Hand-Painted Kinetic Sculpture
Off Script began as an original acrylic painting filled with spontaneous lines, layered marks, bold color, and the kind of visual wandering that happens when I let a painting find its own direction.
After completing the painting, I hand cut each individual component, choosing shapes and fragments that could carry their own small piece of the larger composition. I then balanced the painted forms along slender stainless steel rods, transforming the original painting into a kinetic sculpture.
I think of these works as moving paintings. Each hand-cut form carries a different fragment of the original artwork, and as the mobile responds to the gentlest air currents, those fragments turn, disappear, and return. Lines cross and separate. Colors meet briefly and move apart. The composition is never entirely still and never quite the same twice.
This particular piece has more energetic line work than many of my paintings—marks that feel a little like graffiti, handwriting, symbols, and visual notes made in the middle of an improvisation. Some are bold and graphic; others are only revealed as the individual paintings slowly turn.
Off Script measures approximately 32 inches tall by 17 inches wide. The hand-cut painted components are created from substantial 420 lb artist-grade cotton watercolor board, painted with acrylics, sealed for protection, and individually balanced by hand in my Natchez, Mississippi studio.
Because the original painting, each hand-cut component, and the final balance of the sculpture are all created individually by hand, Off Script is a one-of-a-kind original work of kinetic art.
